Happy #ElevatedFriday! With so many negative stories, bitter arguments, and frustrating stalemates between politicians, it is easy to write all politicians off as self-serving or corrupt. However, just as in any group of people, there are some good and some bad. When it comes to politicians, it is rare to see any held up as good by both parties. But two San Franciscan politicians have proven to be the exception to that rule. A local City District Supervisor and a former Supervisor faced an appalling mess at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations and no one to clean it up. Hillary Ronen and Bevan Dufty took matters into their own hands and for the last two months every Wednesday have dutifully cleaned up several BART stations from what they describe as "unacceptable" levels of filth. Despite a call to action to the Board of Directors of BART, no one else has joined Ronen and Dufty to help. Nevertheless, they have persisted because they care about their city and the people in it and have the means by which to make a difference.

In the Book of James, it says, "So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." This is a difficult idea to grapple with, because it is human nature to elevate our own problems, busy schedules, and personal goals as more important than acts of generosity, selflessness, or kindness. We also fall victim to the mentality that some problems are too big for just one person to tackle, thus we leave it alone. Jesus did not call us to abandon our families and jobs to try to fix every problem in the world, but He did call us to daily pick up our cross and follow Him. So in the course of our daily life, when we see or hear an opportunity to make a difference, we must do so. Pray today for Jesus to open your heart and eyes to the problems of others and stir a desire within you to help.
