On Christmas Day, parts of Maine received 10 inches or more of snowfall, making it very difficult for some to return to work the following day. One so affected was Betsy Curtis, owner of a local boutique. After arriving to her store on the 26th and seeing the amount of snow outside her door, she immediately began shoveling, as any diligent business owner would. However right after she began, a police officer appeared and insisted upon shoveling for her. As if this random act of kindness wasn’t enough, Curtis remarked after the fact that the police in her town are “constantly coming in and making sure our business are doing okay, and our streets are safe for us and really trying to lend a hand in any way they can help us.”

Most of us, upon having to work the day after Christmas would likely grumble, complain, or at least not be as motivated as on other days. Add nearly a foot of snow and work is the last thing any of us would want to do. However this police officer took such a day to go above and beyond his call of duty to show kindness to someone in his community. In Colossians, it says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” As we all begin our years, our work will inevitably claim large portions of our time. Before heading into work each day this year, clothe yourself in Colossians 3:12.
