The Senate voted to end the government shutdown yesterday, allowing for governmental services to resume. In a moment of bipartisanship, our leaders came together for the benefit of the country. However the partisan rancor continues to rage, as both sides of the political equation continue to jockey for position for the 2018 midterm elections. One of the most troubling things about the daily political discourse is just how shallow the majority of the talking points are. Political spin does not seek to enlighten but to obscure the appearance of truth. In John, Jesus says, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” Making judgements of others opinions and actions based on how they appear to us leads only to prejudice. Right judgement is justice rooted in compassion. It seeks to understand first rather than condemn. Today, seek to understand others with compassion and thank God that Jesus had the compassion to accept the judgement coming to us.
