Last year in Denver, the city government launched a program to pay homeless people to do work around the city – no resumes, no background checks, no experience required. Anyone interested would only need to show up for the 3 to 6 hour shifts and complete work like mulching parks and clerical work at the libraries. They all were paid a wage of $12.50 per hour. Since the inception of the program, over 284 people have participated and over $109,000 has been paid for over 10,000 work hours completed. Even more importantly, 110 of the people who showed up have now been hired in a permanent position with the city. Of Denver Day Works, one program participant remarked, “If you are able and willing to better yourself and get up and do something, rather than just sitting back and being stuck, Denver Day Works is there. They will help you with anything. They got me through a lot of tough situations. When we didn’t have anything, they were there.”

Charitable giving of money or time is a key facet of following Christ. However sometimes even more important is the charitable giving of opportunity. Just as the old saying goes, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat forever,” through Christ providing the opportunity for someone to change their life can lead to true miracles. As it says in Proverbs, “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” Watering others means giving them a chance to rise to the occasion. Today, search your life for opportunities to give the gift of opportunity and sow bountifully into others in Jesus’ name.

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” – Proverbs 11:25
