As Hurricane Florence continues to strengthen and bear down on the Carolina coast, the politics of storm recovery are already taking hold in the media. Just as other presidents and their administrations have been criticized by the media for their responses to natural disasters, so too this one will surely take some criticism as well as praise. But before we criticize or praise, we all should have a singular focus on helping those in the hurricane’s path. Whether we are called to serve in person or pray from afar, we must focus our efforts on what Jesus would be doing in this situation. In Philippians, it says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” We can rest assured that Jesus would be focused on the safety and well-being of others and not on politics or criticizing those responsible for delivering aid. Don’t let political considerations affect your heart for helping others. Today, pray for protection and well-being for those to be affected by this storm and for safety and skill for those who will be there to rebuild in it’s aftermath.
