Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of inspiring commitment and neighborly love. Every night for the last 10 years, one community in Utah’s men have banded together to help their elderly neighbor, Kathy Felt, get to bed safely and comfortably. Kathy suffers from multiple sclerosis, which has left her wheelchair-bound. The one task she cannot complete for herself is getting into and out of bed each day. Without help, most people in Kathy’s situation are forced into nursing homes to receive the help they need. However, her neighbor Keith Pugmire did not want to let this disease dictate Kathy’s quality of life. Thus, Keith recruited 60 men of their community to take turns helping Kathy into bed each night. Kathy’s son comes over each morning to help her out of bed for the day. This daily schedule has continued for over 10 years now, allowing Kathy to live comfortably in her own home. The generosity and commitment to ensuring their neighbor’s comfort and dignity is truly inspiring.

If there was one thing that you knew your neighbor needed that would make all the difference in the world to them, would you provide it? Jesus made a habit of this, meeting the one most pressing need of those before him. This took many forms, including healing blindness, lameness, leprosy, or casting out demons, among others. But upon receiving this healing, that person was able to live a life of normalcy. We call these miracles, which of course they are, but what Jesus did was not to create some super-human or help someone live a life of luxury. Jesus brought them back to a “normal” life. Sometimes we take for granted having a “normal” life, when so many others are dreaming of just that. Sometimes, the miracle our neighbor needs is just to be helped back to a normal life. Today, look around to see what neighbors of yours need help getting back to “normal” and if you can, provide that need.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12: 30-31 NIV
