The heat of another presidential election more than a year away is already ramping up in our news. Already there are bitter squabbles that either frame the other side as evil or contemptuous or end in some sort of “my-way-or-the-highway” ultimatum. It is for this reason that Elevated Discourse was founded – to elevate the political discourse of today above party lines and towards Jesus. Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Donna Brazile wrote an op-ed yesterday about why she is joining Fox News for coverage of the 2020 presidential race. This is a decision that came as a shock to many on the left – and some on the right. In her article (link below) she says that the reason she made this decision is because she wants to listen more intently to the other side and provide responses that seek to find solutions rather than just argue for argument’s sake. She says, “In order for us to best decide as a people how to better protect and preserve our way of life, we need to first be able to hear what others are saying without the filter of bias and contempt. Not until we once again become practiced at treating those of differing views with civility and respect can we begin to join together to solve the myriad of problems our country must overcome.” What she is saying is really what the Bible has told us all along. In Proverbs, it says plainly, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” Just as with listening to Jesus, until we learn to listen to each other, instead of just arguing back and forth, we will never see the life change that we all so desperately desire. Today, resolve to listen to those who think differently than you and respond with care and kindness instead of argument and belittlement.
