Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of one young man who is making a difference in his community in an effort to heal it in the wake of tragedy. Sixth-grader Ruben Martinez went viral this week for his effort to heal his home community of El Paso after the tragic shooting last weekend. He has issued the “#ElPasoChallenge” that challenges each person in El Paso to do 22 good deeds – one for each of the lives lost last weekend. People across the community and, thanks to news breaking about his challenge, across the nation are following his lead and helping their fellow community members.

We all strive to be positive and support one another but often it is only with a kind word, a Facebook message of support, or a quick text. While these are certainly appreciated, what they all lack is a time commitment. Words are easy to give, but time and effort are not. That is why we are called to actually “do good” and not just “say good things.” By doing good, we let our light shine before others, and therefore, our Father – or the one who sent us – is glorified. Jesus said exactly that in Matthew, saying, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” There are no words that can communicate what one good deed can. Today, if you aren't able to commit to twenty-two acts of kindness, commit to at least one in Jesus’ name.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16 NIV
