There is a great irony in Memorial Day each year, the day we honor, remember, and wholeheartedly thank those men and women who have died in defense of our nation and the freedoms we enjoy. The Bible tells us, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” For most of us this takes the form of opening doors for others (both figuratively and literally), thinking of others feelings and needs before our own, or giving what we have to others in need. We see those who lead from the front as self-serving or after their own glory. But there is one group of people who lead from the front in order to serve those behind them. That group is the men and women of the US Armed Forces. These brave and selfless people lead the charge against those enemies who would cause harm to us not by standing behind us but by purposefully standing before us on front lines worldwide. The great irony of Memorial Day is that we honor those who, by standing in front of us, have exemplified in the most ultimate way what it means to place others before themselves.
