Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of regular people who, when they saw they were needed, stepped up to help. In Huntly, New Zealand last Friday night, a sudden staff member’s family emergency resulted in the chef being the only employee there to serve the hungry customers. However, instead of leaning on the chef to do it all, the patrons of the restaurant picked up the slack. One woman grabbed a pen and paper and took orders. Another customer started doing dishes. Finally, someone in the shop next door offered their help, too. The patrons chipped in to help the chef and everyone left well fed and paid up. It is a small thing, but shows what good can happen when we take initiative to do what is right.

We all deserve to take breaks from work from time to time for rest; even God rested on Sunday! But rest is far different from laziness. Rest is a recuperative state, it is active, it prepares us for continued work. Laziness, on the other hand, prepares us for nothing, provides no good, and neglects the tasks assigned to us. Proverbs says, “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” While this is true for us personally, there is a bigger message. In God’s eyes, when it comes to prosperous work, personal wealth isn’t the first goal – it is the overall wealth, health, and blessing of communities. Thus, if we do not work for anything, we are lazy; but so, too, are we lazy if we only work for ourselves. In doing so, we neglect the greater tasks assigned to us by God. Today, resolve to be diligent, working hard for more than just your own betterment.

“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” – Proverbs 10:4 NIV
