The presidential race each four years, while well-meaning, can still bring out the worst in our nation as people divide themselves along party and other imaginary lines. It also leads to endless debate that sometimes turns to full on bitter quarrels. Many of those quarrels are about what we perceive as “wrong” with our society today and how we believe it can be corrected. There are certainly issues in our society that deserve thought and debate, but there are many today that are just not important in the grand scheme of things — their purpose in our national discourse is to divide and drive voters to the polls. Those who stir up controversy for the sole reason of gaining fame and fandom for themselves should be viewed, at best, skeptically. The Bible says, “But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.” Foolish controversies are bred by foolish people; rise above them by recognizing God’s priorities on earth. Today, remove yourself from foolish controversies that are hurting your ability to help others.
