Elevated Friday, June 14th, 2019

Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of an unlikely hero, who because she disregarded what others might think of her, was able to protect families from potential tornados. In Texas, Megan Parson is a fourth grade teacher by day, but on the side, she is an Instagram fashion blogger. We have all seen these sorts of influencers online, whose photos are often perfectly staged and show beautiful clothes, items, and other trends. Recently, as school was letting out and kids were leaving, a tornado warning was issued for the area the school was in. The children all sheltered safely inside the schools, but Megan noticed that there was a long line of parents in their cars waiting to pick up their children. Figuring they probably were not hearing the tornado warning, she bolted outside in the storm, shouting to the parents to take cover. However, one thing she forgot was that she was still wearing a fake black mustache that she had been wearing for a class party that day. So, there was this Instagram influencer, who usually appears to have everything together, running through a storm with a fake mustache on, wildly gesturing to parents. She was successful in getting the parents to take cover, but definitely sacrificed some of her stylishness to do so! While this story is a funny one with a happy ending, it still shows what we can do if we refuse to care what others think.

We all at some point in our lives have decided against helping or advocating for someone because we worried what others might think of us. People say peer pressure is most prevalent when we are young and impressionable, but often, the impression it makes on us when we are young still affects us later in life. Think of how many people that Jesus touched in his life who, because they were nervous about what others would think of them if they professed him as Lord, chose to remain with the masses. Think of how many today still do the same. Proverbs tells us, “It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.” You are not living the full life God intended for you if you only live in the box that others create for you. Today, if you are feeling trapped in a box made by the masses, leap out and rise to your God-given potential.

“It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.” – Proverbs 29:25
