After a tough week of political mud-slinging, inflamed once more by the Donald Trump Jr. meeting with a Russian lawyer, we all need a little encouragement that God is still in control. Mostly overlooked this week was a story that should bring hope and comfort to all. On Wednesday, before traveling to France, President Trump and Vice President Pence invited a group of evangelical leaders to the Oval Office for a prayer session (picture below). This picture reminds me of the books of 1 and 2 Chronicles, which detail the history and lineage of the Kings of Israel. A common theme throughout the books is that for each king chronicled, he is labeled as having done “what was right in the sight of the Lord” or “what was evil in the sight of the Lord.” The common thread for all Kings that did what was “right” was that they prayerfully sought God’s word in their governing and stood for Him in all matters. The Kings who did “evil” leaned on their own understanding, were motivated by sin, and saw themselves as God. Regardless of our opinions on the current administration and its policies, we should all take heart that the power of prayer is influencing our President. If we wish to see our nation succeed, we must pray our leaders seek God’s will and act upon it. A prayerful approach to governing appoints Jesus as the top White House Adviser. Pray today for our President and his administration, for our Congressmen and women, for our Supreme Court, and for all the leaders we follow that they take a prayerful approach to governing.
