Scripture: Col. 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Teaching: After discussing how to live a Christian, or Christ-following, life in this group of verses, Paul concludes with a simple yet profound statement in v. 17: “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” In the culture Paul came from, someone’s name embodied their character. This kind of thinking does not pervade our culture to the same extent today, but the concept of keeping honor in one’s name by living rightfully and with integrity still echoes today. In Paul’s time though, by invoking someone’s name, you spoke as though you represented them. Thus, Paul concludes his thought of putting off anger and putting on agape love by saying – whatever you do or say, do it to glorify Christ! In doing so, be thankful for the ability and opportunity to live in such a way.

Takeaway: Most of us have worked a job where we were forced to be a representative of a company and adhere to sometimes strict corporate policies. It is burdensome, especially when we are forced to comply with the company’s way over what we would rather do. Glorifying Christ in whatever we do or say is not a heavy burden. Though at times it will be difficult, especially when the world or our own flesh wants us to behave in ways counter to Christ, Jesus’ yoke is light for this reason: it leads to life. When we put off anger and put on agape, or Christ-like, love, we will not gratify the flesh but instead live a Spirit-led life. The kind of life Christ wants for us, and that following Him leads to, is not more of this world but more of Him. Today, remember this truth, be thankful in your heart for it, and live in the freedom that walking with Christ bestows.
