It is rare to hear a politician take full responsibility for his or her actions. With news swirling around the firing of ex-Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe drawing ire from both sides of the aisle, it brings to focus another story of a lack of personal responsibility. While there are certainly instances in our lives when outside events have led us to situations beyond our control, the decisions we make while there are entirely our own. In the Bible, Ezra lamented the fact that the Israelites had intermarried with outside tribes, something God had forbidden. But Shekaniah did not allow Ezra to just lament what had been done, he challenged him to make a new covenant with God to turn from this behavior and reaffirm Israel’s commitment to God. He said, “Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.” Taking responsibility for our actions is part of faithfully serving the Lord. Running from our God-given responsibilities is running from God himself. Today, reflect upon what in your life are your God-given responsibilities and align your priorities with them in mind.

“Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.” — Ezra 10:4 ESV
