Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of a couple who, with nothing but a good idea and some ingenuity, are making a big difference in both the environment and in the lives of children. Laura and Chris Moriarty are no environmental scientists or medical device manufacturers, but what they have in spades in passion and drive. With nothing by an idea and a 3D printer, the couple founded the Million Waves Project, a charity that recycles plastic pollution in the oceans into prosthetics for children. Chris and Laura hand cut the plastics into small bits to be turned into prosthetic limbs for children and offer them for roughly $45 a piece, a price drastically lower than traditional prosthetics. The Million Waves Project has taken off and continues to grow, and currently the couple is saving up for an industrial plastic shredder so that they can turn the 18 limbs they have currently made into hundreds and hundreds more.

We all have a gift given to us by God. For some, it is a sharp mind that absorbs technical, mathematical, or scientific knowledge; for others, it is interpersonal skills and the ability to embrace other people – or a million other things! There is no limit to what God can create within us. For some, finding our gift can be a major challenge. Sometimes it can seem like we are just not good at anything. But sometimes, God’s gift to us is simply our perseverance, persistence, and drive to help others. As evidenced by Chris and Laura Moriarty, in order to make a huge impact on the world, it does not take a Ph.D. in environmental science or some other field – it only takes passion. God will fill in the gaps between our passion and the world’s opportunities when our passion seeks to glorify Him. As it says in 1 Peter, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” Today, recognize that you have a gift from God, and give thanks to God for it by using it in service of others.
