As we engage in the political process to evaluate candidates for the 2020 presidential race, one test that comes up frequently is whether a candidate is “genuine.” Being genuine mostly means that person walks the walk and talks the talk like a true believer in the things they are saying. But just as we evaluate our potential leaders, so, too, does God evaluate us every day. We will account for our lives and the decisions made when we meet Him one day, so we must be always considering how our walk and our talk reflect the beliefs we profess. Peter wrote, “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” If we, as followers of Jesus, claim to walk in his footsteps, we must also talk in his words. This means that no hate, evil, judgment, malice, and other unclean words can leave our lips – no matter whom they are directed towards. Today, resolve to talk as Jesus talked – full of love, empathy, and forgiveness.
