Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story that takes the term “customer service” to a new level. In Birmingham, Alabama, because of a scheduling mistake, Ethan Crispo was the only employee on duty for the night shift at the Waffle House he worked and was faced with 30 hungry customers. Ethan was working frantically to do everything from taking orders to cooking to serving, ringing up payments, bussing tables, and cleaning dishes. It was overwhelming to say the least. One customer noticed Ethan speaking with a man before handing him an apron and showing the man behind the bar. Originally, that customer though it must have been an employee coming off break but he quickly realized that man was a customer like himself. Soon, several more customers began volunteering to make coffee, bus tables, clean dishes, and generally just help out around the restaurant. The customers who came to be served ended up serving because they saw someone in need of a hand.
We all work hard at what we do, and often, when we are off work, we don’t feel so much like doing extra work. But none of us can control the people and situations that God places in our path — and frankly, why would we want to? God blesses us and others through those interactions. Consider how you would feel if you needed help and not a single passerby offered it? It is in moments when we offer blessings to others that Jesus shines through us most brightly. Proverbs says, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” In other words, life is about serving, not being served. Today and everyday, keep your eyes open and heart ready to bless others that God places in your path.
