Leadership can be shown in many qualities, actions, and decisions, but how do we know if a leader is leading us somewhere good for us? It's hard to tell in the day to day, and often, we do not realize the repercussions of poor leadership until we are mired in its consequences. When seeking out a leader, the Bible beckons us to seek out one particular quality above all else: submission to God. A leader who does not fear God and love Jesus, is a leader that, even if not right now, will one day be led astray by false teachings, fleshly desires, or hubris of spirit. No man or woman is capable of resisting the temptations of the enemy forever by themselves. When we look to the Bible for leadership inspiration, one leader stands out in my opinion: Joshua. Joshua assumed leadership of the Israelites after Moses' passing, attempting to fill enormous shoes. One of his declarations has become a well-known verse and has adorned the walls of many homes because it exemplifies what leadership is. There is no stronger statement of leadership than this: "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” We all seek leaders in life, and while none of us can be perfect, choosing a leader submitted first and foremost to the will of God is the best leader we can follow. It is imperative to our own walk with Christ that we choose leaders who fear God and love Jesus, honoring the awesome power of our Creator while seeking to live out the qualities that Jesus exampled. Today, consider who you follow: where are they leading you?
