Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight the story of a 94-year-old veteran in El Dorado Hills, CA who is making a positive impact on the lives of children in his area. Wally Richardson, a veteran, spends each morning walking to the street corner that the local middle school sits on so that he can be there when the children arrive. Whenever they walk by, he offers life advice, encouragement, and always a fist bump on their way into school for the day. Wally has been doing this for 10 years now and has made a real difference in the lives of many students. Offering advice like, “Never look down on anyone unless you are helping them up,” “What you do makes you what you are,” and “Be kind whenever possible. It’s always possible,” Wally has been honored by a mural on the side of the school of him, his dog, and many of his most famous sayings. They call it “Wally’s Wall.” Wally proves each day that we all can do something the make this world a little kinder and more positive.
We often hear sayings like “The real world isn’t fair” or “The world is a cold place, better toughen up” or things like it driving home the point that kindness is rarely found past our front door step. That may be true, but it is not because God designed it that way. That lack of kindness stems from the fall of man and is the work of the enemy. In Romans, Paul urges us to “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” We daily defeat the enemy when we choose kindness over coldness. Today, take the inspiration of Wally Richardson and choose to be kind and encouraging to those you encounter and see the lasting effect it will have on you and them.
