The term “awakening” or “staying woke” is used frequently these days in political talk, denoting the idea that people are waking up to what is really happening in the country. While being knowledgeable of the issues that face our nation is not a bad endeavor, if we allow politics to consume our thoughts it will soon dictate our words and actions — and thus taking the place of words and actions that glorify Jesus. God has so much more in life for us than politics and the issue of the day. We may consider ourselves “woken up” to what is going on in our country, but are we awake to what is going on in the Kingdom of God? Paul wrote to the Romans in part to say that “The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.” There is so much more to awaken to in this world than what issue is dominating news coverage that day, and so much more to do than be angry about it. Today, pray for Jesus to awaken you to the world He sees, not the world we see in the nightly news.

“And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” — Romans 13:11-14 ESV
