Elevated Friday, December 7th, 2018

Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight the story of a firefighter who changed his plans in order to help others – and ended up saving lives. Retired firefighter Luis Garcia had been saving his money for years with the goal of purchasing a new luxury SUV for himself. But in 2017, soon before he made the purchase, he heard about a new medication called Narcan that could save the lives of drug overdosers. Garcia knew how prevalent of a problem this was from his years of answering 911 calls. So, in an incredible stroke of generosity, he used his $40,000 to buy 800 doses of Narcan so he could give them away for free. Since then, he has committed his retirement years to spreading awareness of the medication, fundraising for is availability, and even hosting awareness events to the public. He also continues to listen to his police scanner and has rushed to the scene of 11 overdoes so far to give them his own supply of Narcan. To date, Garcia has saved 94 lives with his supply of Narcan. His incredible generosity paved a new path for him in life and not only has helped others, but saved many lives.

Proverbs tells us, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” We all make plans in life and have goals of where we want to be. However we often find ourselves in vastly different circumstances than we had imagined. God has His own plan for our lives and the closer we are to His thoughts, the more quickly we will find ourselves living the life He wants for us. What’s more, the life God has set out for us will always surpass the life we have envisioned for ourselves. Today, lean in to God and ask Him what is next for you.
