Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a company that is using its expertise and resources to help vulnerable populations in need of a helping hand. Lyft, the well-known ride-sharing company, is rolling out nationally a new initiative to give free and discounted rides to passengers who are starting new jobs. The Jobs Access Program will help unemployed people, particularly veterans and the disabled, to attend job interviews, job training, and the first three weeks of work prior to receiving a paycheck. Lyft’s company statement noted, “A recent study pinpoints commuting time as the single strongest factor in the odds of escaping poverty. Our own study shows that 44% of Lyft rides start or end in low income areas, and that our passengers saved 178 million hours compared to other transportation modes.” Consider for a moment the struggle of needing a job, or even receiving a job offer, but being unable to get to the job on-time each day. Such a gift from a company who has the capabilities to solve that issue is a miracle for many. Lyft’s generosity and care for vulnerable communities is sure to bring change to many lives.
Jesus charged his 12 disciples to venture far and wide proclaiming the kingdom of heaven and healing people in his name. Specifically though, he said, “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.” Could Jesus have given a more clear and concise reason for tireless work in his name? “You received without paying; give with pay.” We all need to make a living in life to support our families, but not everything in life is meant to be compensated. We’ve all heard the saying “time is money,” and while time is our most valuable resource, shouldn’t that mean it should be the first thing we give to Jesus? When we give our time and attention to Jesus, he will always direct our efforts towards his own work. Today, decide to give more time to Jesus and allow him to direct your giving efforts in his name.
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.” – Matthew 10:8 ESV
