Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of a group of healthcare professionals who went truly above and beyond in their line of duty because they knew their purpose was a more powerful calling than their duties. Hurricane Laura made landfall last week in Lake Charles, LA, an extremely powerful category-4 hurricane. Louisiana, more than most states, knows the risks of riding out hurricanes, and thankfully, many people evacuated. However, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, 19 newborn, premature babies could not be evacuated. Heroically, Dr. Juan Bossano and his team of 14 nurses, two neonatal nurse practitioners, and three respiratory therapists stayed through the night in the NICU to care for these babies. As 135 mph winds battered the area and their air conditioning and water service knocked out, the team of healthcare professionals successfully protected the babies from harm. The incredible act of service by these healthcare professionals truly shows what good we can do when we pursue our purpose over our duties.
We all have duties in life, whether they be to our employer, our family, or community. When emergencies happen, what we are called to do is often trumped by what will protect ourselves and our families. God’s purpose is so much bigger for us than just protecting ourselves and those we love though – God’s purpose always involves other people, often those we do not even know. Psalms says, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” We live closer to God when we live purpose-driven instead of simply duty-driven. Today, consider how you lead your life: are you just checking the boxes of completed tasks, or chasing after God’s purpose in your life?
