The Republican party unveiled its plan to replace the Affordable Care Act yesterday, and opened it up for review and debate. Without a doubt, there will be innumerable pundits giving their opinions on TV, radio, and online. In addition, since healthcare is such a highly emotional and critical issue, there will also be countless friends and family members storming to social media to either defend the new proposed legislation or tear it down. As with anything in life, different people will inevitably have different opinions. In his letter to the twelves tribes, James urges them to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” Instead of retreating to our preconceived notions, let us all seek out opinions different than ours. Let us listen to understand. Let us be slow to speak, carefully choosing our words so that we do not divide, but collaborate. Most of all, let us be slow to anger. The national debates we argue are between two sides who both want what they think is best for the greatest amount of people. Pray today to be a unifier and collaborator with those you disagree with.
