Instead of simply informing us of what is going on, increasingly our news is presented as a debate. These debates are meant to provoke a reaction from each of us and force us into taking a side. Many claim the “divide and conquer” strategy is the only way to effect change. But in studying Jesus, it becomes apparent that there are two ways to elicit a reaction: disruption and provocation. Jesus disrupted, calling attention to the flaws of man but then used his platform to point us back to God. Provocation grabs attention, often by inciting anger, but then uses the platform to draw attention to our own selfish motives. Too often, to win these debates, each side only espouses its own righteousness but neglects its sin. In 1 John it says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Jesus came to save the sinners who call upon Him as Lord because in admitting our own sin we acknowledge our need for Jesus. Today, in your words and deeds, seek to disrupt and point to God instead of provoke.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” – 1 John 1:8 ESV
