The Oscars last night, just as any award ceremony, recognizes achievement in performance. We all strive for success in our lives — whether it be at work, in sport, or at home — and when we achieve it, it is challenging not to bask in our own glory or congratulate ourselves. The urge to utter the words, “I earned it!” or worse yet, “I deserve it!” can be overwhelming sometimes. Winning and being successful in life is not a bad thing, and our Father in heaven wants to see us just so. But God wants to see us succeed for His glory, not our own. In Matthew, it says “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Blessings are bestowed in order for praise and thanks to be lifted, not for egos to be bloated. Today, reflect on what you would say if presented with an award, promotion, or big win right now, and to whom you would give the credit.
