Truth is hard to come by in politics. Truth is also necessary as the bedrock for any venture, relationship, or dealing between people because it is a reflection of the level of respect one party holds for another. Most importantly, though, truth is the foundation upon which love can grow. Paul the Apostle knew this well, and in his letter to the Ephesians presented quite the argument for why we cannot love each other nor Christ without truth. He said, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Love without truth is deception, and building any structure atop deception can only lead to its toppling. Today, speak truth in love to those you meet and see how your relationships will change for the better in Christ.
