The helicopter crash in NYC and plane crash in Nepal in the last day were both tragic, however unfortunately they were not rare or unheard of. The reality of living is that we do not know the time nor place when our lives can be ended in the blink of an eye. The Bible makes this notion clear, and the Apostle James summed it up well saying, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” While James stresses here the brevity of life, the entire New Testament testifies as to how much God loves each and every one of us, so much so that He gave his only son for those same “vapors.” So how do these two seemingly opposing ideas intersect? They intersect on the cross in Jesus. No matter how long or short a time God plans for each of us to live on this earth, our lives find meaning when living for Jesus. For when we live for Jesus, two things happen: we lead others to Him on earth and we ink our names in the Book of Life in heaven. Today, pray for the loved ones of those affected by these tragedies and reflect upon how you can draw closer to Jesus.
