Happy #ElevatedFriday! Today we highlight the story of how a selfless 8-year-old boy in Pineville, Louisiana made a life long friend. Jaron Johnson was with his mother at Walmart when he stumbled across a $100 dollar bill in the parking lot. Rather than pocket it (as most children and adults would do), Jaron’s first instinct was to find the owner of it because he thought they would likely want it back. After speaking with the Walmart employees, it was determined that the $100 belonged to 86-year-old James Grice who was living on a fixed income. Without that $100, James was unable to buy his groceries. But when he discovered that Jaron wanted to return it to him, he was overjoyed. James gave Jaron $20 and a permanent invitation to pick tomatoes from his vegetable garden – Jaron’s favorite snack!
So many things in society and culture today tell us that because life is not fair, we need to be in it for ourselves. They say we shouldn’t prioritize anyone over ourselves or else we are only holding ourselves back. This notion could not be more wrong. It says in 1 Corinthians, “Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” Working for our own gain will never bring us more joy or success in life than working for the betterment of others. Today, consider what your motivations are for what you do. Are they making others better?
