The sudden and tragic suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain last week have thrust the issue of mental health and depression back into the forefront of the public square. Suicide is one of the most tragic things to deal with in life, both by the one who ends up taking their life and the ones they leave behind. We all will inevitably face times in our lives of doubt, sadness, and fear; that is just part of being human. But God has a listening ear and a loving embrace for all who call upon Him in times of trouble. In Psalm 34, it says, “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.” There is no affliction that God cannot deliver us from. The only variable is our faith in those times of affliction. Today, reach out to your friends and family, both those who may be struggling and those who seem to be the strongest, and show them the kind of love God has for each of us.
