Happy #ElevatedFriday! Today we highlight a story of selflessness, practicality, and one woman’s burning desire to help the needy even at her own funeral. In Georgia, 58-year-old Tammy Waddell recently passed away from prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy of lives touched as a paraprofessional and teacher. It came as no surprise to those who knew her best that her final wish was for her funeral to serve others. Rather than have the church decorated with flowers, Tammy requested everyone bring a backpack full of school supplies to be donated to needy students. The image of backpacks lining the aisle of that church is a powerful one. It shows that even in the darkest times, there can still be light when God is present.

Most of us have been to a funeral or two in our lives. They are always somber occasions as we remember the life of a loved one lost. But consider for a moment what light and life could be injected into such a defeated situation when the room is full of gifts for those in need as a means to remember our loved one! By worshipping and serving God in our darkest times, the darkness will scatter as God’s light shines upon it. In John, it says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” If we seek life in places where there is death and darkness, we need only seek Jesus, the light in the darkness. Today, give thanks that Jesus is your light in the darkness, and if you are fumbling through darkness today, reach out your hands to Jesus.
