Each week shoots more rocks and arrows at those in power, some warranted and some unfounded. It is important to hold those we elect to power both accountable for their actions and to the people they represent, but in the quest for political power, many times we cross the line from righteous disagreement to slander and sinful wishes. When power is up for grabs for those who seek it, as is the basis of our democracy, temptation is behind more doors than righteousness. It takes a very wise and humble person to withstand that temptation and lead effectively – something the wisest understand they cannot do under their own moral strength. James wrote about wisdom in the Bible, saying, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” Let them show it – not speak about it, not pretend to be it, not call out the misdeeds of others. Let them show their wisdom by their own good life and by deeds done in humility. If we feel the need to boast about our good life or good deeds, we fail to understand what makes our life and deeds truly good. In humility, we find the true spirit of Jesus. Today, humble yourself before Jesus and seek to live today for him alone – not for those who may follow you.
