The ongoing confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh continues to dominate headlines. In that Senate chamber, it seems like politics is the only cause both sides are fighting for. Have you ever felt torn between what you know God wants for you to do and what society wants for you to do? Many times both of these things coincide, however there are times when they do not. If we are honest about politics and political causes in our country, we can acknowledge that neither party has the moral high ground or acts upon the will of God every time. It is not in their nature to obey God above all else – their nature is to win elections. However so many today substitute the values of their preferred political party for what is really true, just, and righteous before God. In Matthew, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” While Jesus was talking about money as the other master, one could easily substitute any number of earthly causes or vices – including politics and power. When it comes to politics, what can begin as a heartfelt desire to help others can lead to sin when not done in the name of and with the blessing of God. We must be willing to change our course when we sense our course drifting from God. Today, evaluate what course you are on and whether or not it is taking you closer to God.
