When controversy stirs up, what is our immediate reaction? If we are honest with ourselves, for many of us it is to take a side. But when we do that, every piece of information we hear then either confirms our bias or we minimize its importance. When we have our minds set on defending our own opinions, the first thing we discard is the grace we would have extended to those who see things different from us. In Colossians, Paul urges us, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Grace is the difference between a civil debate and a civil war. Today, extend grace to all those you disagree with — both the people you see today and those you hear about in the news.
