If we watch any TV or listen to any media this time of year, you might think this is the season of shopping rather than the season of giving. Shopping for and giving gifts to those we love is no sin, it is a welcome endeavor in the eyes of the Lord. However, when we choose to only give to those who we love, or who love us (and give us gifts), are we acting more like Jesus or common sinners? Jesus said, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.” Jesus did not die for our sins so that we would give only to those who give back to us. Today, give freely to those who need it most this time of year without any expectation of reward or repayment.
