Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of a man who, despite challenges he was born with, has innovated a way to help himself and now is focused on helping others using the same solution. David Aguilar was born without a right forearm due to a rare genetic condition. Despite this challenge, David always loved playing with LEGOs as a child. He became so talented at building with them that at only the age of 9 he built his first prosthetic arm out of the toy bricks. Over the years, he has continued to innovate and work to make his LEGO arm stronger and better. Now 19 years old, his LEGO arm is strong enough for him to do push-ups! He is now a bioengineering student in Spain with the goal of designing prosthetic solutions for other disabled kids at an affordable price. David’s ingenuity goes to show that when we refuse to allow challenges to own us, we can create solutions for more people like us to benefit from.

We are all born with gifts, given to us by God himself so that we can help others that God plans for us to help. It says as much in Ephesians 2, saying, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” But when we are faced with big challenges, it is easy to allow them to rule our thoughts and limit our creativity in how we can overcome them. But we are God’s own handiwork, and therefore are capable of all things through Christ Jesus – including innovating new ways to overcome our challenges. Often, what we innovate to help ourselves can be used to help others. Today, if you are facing a challenge, get creative in how you can overcome it. If you have already overcome a challenge, seek ways to help others with what you have learned.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 NIV
