The news of actor Jussie Smollett’s charges being suddenly dropped broke yesterday and caused quite a stir in the media. While we do not know with certainty what happened with him, we can still be certain of a couple of things. First, and most importantly, we can be certain that God loves us, is taking care of us, and is making a path for us forward. Secondly, we can be certain that each of us will face Him one day to account for what we have done in our lives. When we see things in our world that frustrate or anger us, we can sometimes feel like He is not working correctly or is not acting justly. However, our God is the God of the individual – He does not only care for all of us, He cares for each of us individually. Because He cares for us individually, He also applies justice individually. We are not punished, nor rewarded, by God because of the actions of other people. In Romans, it says, “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Today, rather than be angry about the things you perceive as a lack of justice in our society, be thankful that we each are not condemned by God because of what others do.
