The burning of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris came as a shock to the world yesterday, as it is a place of rich history, cultural and religious significance, and even holds a special place in many people’s hearts across the world. While it is a blessing that no one seems to have been hurt in the fire, it is normal to feel a sense of loss when this, or anything in our lives, suddenly leaves us. Whether it be a job, a house, a possession, or any thing that we rely upon or hold dear, the feelings of grief can quickly grab hold of our hearts and mind and lead us in the wrong direction. Jesus made clear to his disciples in his teachings that there are things of earth and there are things of Heaven and they are very different. The things of earth will not last but the things of Heaven will endure forever. Thus, while life may not become easier, it will become clearer when we remember that life is about seeking the things of Heaven and not clinging to the things of earth. Psalm 73 puts this idea this way, ”My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Today, if you are dealing with a loss of something in your life, remember that your purpose for being here was never to safe guard that thing but instead seek the Kingdom of God.

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” – Psalm 73:26 NIV
