Continuing with the theme of leadership this week, as our nation readies for an election or re-election of its next leader, the Bible igives many pieces of advice and parables about leadership. The Old Testament chronicles many leaders – kings and rulers – and their exploits. It also shows the inevitability of change in leadership at the hands of God. Solomon, often hailed as one of the wisest men and leaders to ever live, authored the Book of Proverbs in which he passes along many pieces of advice to future generations. Solomon knew that change in leadership is inevitable, but a good leader can rule for many years if he serves God and his people. Proverbs 27 tells us, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.” The leader who serves God first and his people second – reserving himself for last – is a Biblically great leader. Today, give thought to the order in which your actions in leadership are serving – God, others, or yourself.
