Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a non-profit charity that is exemplifying the spirit of Matthew 6:1 – to give without recognition. Alice’s Kids is a charity founded by two people who grew up very poor, having to work hard to put food on the table for their family, and did not get a chance to spend money on the small things in life. They founded Alice’s Kids to provide other homeless children with simple things like new shoes for athletes, musical instruments for musicians, or even just providing prom tickets so that these kids can participate with their classmates. What’s more is that they give these items without any fanfare, viral social media posts, or news coverage. They just simply provide the items that are requested of them to make a difference in the lives of struggling kids. Alice’s Kids is making a real difference in the lives of kids in ways that aren’t always apparent to us all.
Jesus was clear in his instructions on how to give to the needy in Matthew chapter 6. He said, “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.” When the reason for our giving is to get a tax write off, go viral on social media, gain something in our career, or be recognized in some way, we ruin our testimony. That gift may benefit someone, but God knows our heart. When we stand before God one day, do we want to be known by Him as the one who gave in order to get? Today, consider how you can change your perspective on giving so that it lines up with Jesus’ instructions.
