The Democratic debates took center stage at the end of last week as the party’s presidential candidates confronted each other and spoke to the nation about their ideas for the country. There are many ideas, on both sides of the aisle, that could help the people of our nation just as there are many on both sides that would not. As a nation, we are to act with wisdom, not emotion or quick judgment, as to what we believe will be the best path forward. There is real danger in life in believing our own ideas, passions, and emotions to always be the correct ones as that sort of thinking leads to wrong decisions just as often, if not more often, as right ones. Proverbs tells us, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.” So if wisdom is what we need, where do we acquire it? Proverbs answers that by also saying, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” In life, wisdom and wise decisions come from respecting both the awesome power and awesome love for us of our God. Today, as you continue to evaluate candidates on both sides of the aisle in this presidential race, remember that the Bible tells us that true wisdom is found in the fear and reverence of the Lord — not in the hubris of man.
