Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight an interesting story that came from a study recently done on how likely regular people are to help others when they see them in need. In a time when all we see in the media is people being uncaring, it’s easy to believe that chivalry is dead or that everyone is only out for themselves . However, in the largest-ever study of real-life conflicts captured by CCTV’s worldwide, researchers found that bystanders will intervene in nine out of ten public fights to help victims of aggression and violence. This finding completely overturned the long held belief that most people will choose to not get involved when they see trouble happening and instead retreat or walk away. It just goes to show that what we believe are “commonly held beliefs” are not always commonly held.

Most of us would be surprised by what we could do for others if we only made the time and put in a little effort. Most of us would also be surprised what we can do for others when God puts us in someone else’s life and tells us – I have made YOU to be this person’s life jacket. However, what holds us back still, when we feel God call us and we have the time to help someone, is looking “weird” or standing out in front of our peers. In Proverbs, it says, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” Combine this urging from the Bible with this recent study, and the answer is clear: you’re only “weird” if you do not help others in need. Today, go be normal and be the life jacket someone needs.

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” – Proverbs 3:27 NIV
