In the wake of tragedy, people often ask, “Where is God and why did He allow this to happen?” God takes no pleasure in seeing our suffering but the short answer is that He has already acted. Evil will continue to be evil as long as it is left unchecked by God’s faithful. So, the better question to ask when evil strikes is, “Where were the good people in that person’s life who could have stepped in, and how could this have been prevented?” No one is perfect nor able to cure the soul of others, but God already acted to stop evil by placing each good person on this earth. It is our job to seek out the hurting, the depressed, and the confused to provide them the love, support, and counseling they need. Proverbs says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” We can’t take ownership of others problems or behavior, but we must take ownership of our own ability to love, counsel, and support others. Today, in response to these senseless tragedies, take ownership of your duty to love and help others, especially those who are struggling or deemed unlovable for one reason or another.
