Today marks the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Eighteen years ago today, our nation was forever changed, but even more changed were the lives of each one of those family members who lost someone – whether in the attacks or as a result of rescue efforts. Such senseless loss and tragedy brought this nation together in a way it had not been since WWII. Sadly, today, what unity our nation boasted then is splintered and frayed once more. Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.” The greatest way we can honor both Jesus and those who have given their lives for this nation is by remembering how we are all more alike than different and that love for each other is always the best course of action. Today, give thanks for Jesus’ loving example and for the men and women who defended, and continue to defend, this nation.
