A state of calm is hard to find when we are told each and every day that the world is in a state of calamity. This was just as true during Jesus’ time as now. The Gospel of Matthew recounts a time when the disciples were sailing along smoothly when “suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.”

How often does it seem that a “furious storm” sweeps over us every time we turn on the news? We can all take a lesson from Jesus when storms sweep over us.

The disciples cried out to a sleeping Jesus, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” To which he replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”

Why do we choose to let fear and anxiety rule us when we know that Jesus has already overcome the world and personally saved us? There is no reason for fear because we know Jesus is fully capable of quieting the storms that threaten to sweep over us. Today, if you are carrying fear and anxiety over current events, release them because you trust Jesus has already overcome it all.

“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” — Matthew 8:23-27
