The impeachment hearings began yesterday and the media is all abuzz over what will happen in the coming months. While we cannot be sure of what will happen in this new political battle, we can be sure that each party will fight to win the hearts and minds of the country towards their way of thinking. Tragically, this often takes the form of “divide and conquer” instead of “partner and grow.” Paul warned the Romans of people who would warp public sentiment to suit their own selfish goals. He said, “I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” Jesus didn't teach his followers to “divide and conquer” in order to win hearts and minds; he commanded his followers to lead with love and forgive, even when it is tough. Today, remember that in our lifetimes, we will face countless so-called “political-crises” and likely fall on different sides of those fights at different times. However, even when we disagree with each other, never forsake the teachings of Jesus.
“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” – Romans 16:17-18 ESV
