Elevated Friday, December 6th, 2019
Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of disappointment that instead became a story of acceptance and inspiration. Pro Golfer Brandon Matthews was one 8-foot putt away from qualifying for The Open tournament, one of the biggest tournaments in golf. Make it and he was in. Right as he putted, a loud shout came from the crowd that visibly startled him and caused him to miss the putt. Brandon’s disappointment was apparent to all. However, soon after, Brandon learned that the person who shouted was not someone trying to mess his shot up, but instead was a middle-aged man with a mental disability. He had gotten so excited about the shot that he could not contain it. Immediately after learning this, Brandon asked to meet the fan. He gave him a glove, a ball, and a big hug. Brandon said, “I was around mental disability growing up, and I have a soft spot in my heart for it. Those are really special people. I felt so terrible that I was even upset. I just wanted to make sure that he didn’t feel bad.” The fan was very happy after the meeting and Brandon was happy he could turn his disappointment into “acceptance and compassion.” Brandon said if it all, “Some things are bigger than golf, and this is one of them.”
Have you ever faced disappointment and found yourself blaming someone or something for it? We’ve all been there. When we stew over our disappointment and blame others, we fail to see God’s hand in it all. We will not succeed at everything we do in life because that is God’s design. In each of our failures, God has a lesson and an opportunity for us. Often, we eventually learn the lesson, but miss the opportunity because we were too busy being angry or blaming others. We know this all to be true because the Bible tells us, “ And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Today, if you are dealing with disappointment, stop laying blame and instead learn God’s lesson and seek His opportunity for you.
