Elevated Friday, March 20th, 2020

Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight just one story of the countless that show how people are stepping up to help those in need during this coronavirus pandemic. Chef Jose Andres runs eight Michelin star rated restaurants in Washington, DC and New York City, the highest honor of the culinary world. One would think that such a successful and gourmet chef might focus on keeping their wealthy clientele happy during this time, but Chef Andres is different. He has long had a charity renowned for feeding the world’s most vulnerable people and his heart for giving shone through again in the last week. He closed all of his Michelin-star restaurants to the general public and until further notice, he and his staff will be serving gourmet food solely to out-of-work families and struggling workers – essentially turning his restaurants into soup kitchens (but with high quality food!). They are asking those who can pay for $7 per meal, but “for those who cannot afford to pay, we will welcome as well.” Andres’ giving heart shows what can be done when we refuse to let pride keep us from helping others in need.

We’re in a unique circumstance that is requiring extraordinary efforts by many to get the rest of us through. Beyond effort though, getting through this will require large doses of humility. Being humble means counting others needs as greater than our own, and sharing what we have with them. Pride does the opposite. The Bible tells us to “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.” We must never allow pride to prevent us from helping others in need. Today, be humble and find ways to lift up and help others in need.

“Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” – 1 Peter 5:5 NIV
