Happy Elevated Friday! Today we highlight a story of a company whose mission is helping people who need a hand in getting their lives back on track. Brightmark in San Francisco is a recycling company who innovatively recycles plastics, food and agricultural waste, and electronics. However, while recycling is a great thing, it is not what they do that matter most, it is the why and how. Brightmark hires men and women transitioning out of prison and back into society to work in their company. Their Program Director, Andrew King, said, “Our main mission is not recycling, at all. Our mission is to help people that are coming out of jail and prison with training, mental health, drug addiction, housing, and then help them get a job. We do that through recycling.” Brightmark’s efforts are making a real difference, not just for the health of the environment but also, for the health and well-being of people who need an opportunity to better their lives.

There are countless ways to do good in the world, but the motivations we have behind our efforts are what count more to God. Doing good to glorify ourselves can still leave a positive impact on the recipient, but it does not have the everlasting impact in God’s eyes as doing something for His glory. It feels good to be thanked personally for the good things we do, but the far greater outcome is that someone would know Jesus through the things we do for them. The Bible says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” The why is more important than the what. Today, reflect on the why’s behind your what’s and see how you can better glorify God in what you do.

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
